Genius Hour Update

After our second class, I finally have had my "a-ha" moment for what my genius hour question will be - How can I use recycled materials to create DIY projects for storage purposes?. I am excited to share all of my findings using different artifacts. So far, we have started to use PowToon to display text and images in a unique way making it engaging for our audience. We also have learned how to embed from our google drive which you can find on my 'GH Proposal' page which goes into detail about my genius hour question. I have set goals to complete each week which reminds me that I need to start researching possible DIY projects I can create - better get started!

What is Copyright?

Copyright laws allow the creators of original work to receive rights to their work for how it can be used to the public. Using copied documents such as images, photographs, or articles, is illegal unless permission from the creator has been obtained or a payment has been made to the copyright owner. However, Creative Commons has made this process easier so the public will be allowed to use different documents as they have access to what the creator has allowed to be used or shared. Since these documents are properly copyrighted allowing distribution, the public may use them when properly cited. It is a great system if you want to share your creative works along with the power to decide what part of your copyright you will let the public use for free! In teaching, it is important to make sure videos or photos are not shown in class unless you have the rights to do so.

When having to teach students about the importance of copyrights is a critical issue to explain so making it as relatable as possible may be the best way to get the message across. We are taught to not take things that are not ours from others unless we ask the owner. If we go against this, parents are likely to discipline the child as that is not the respectful thing to do. This is very similar to copyright since we need permission from the creator to use documents that belong to them. If permission is not granted, and a student still uses the creator’s piece of work, students need to be informed that there are consequences that follow as that is not legally allowed.

Welcome to my blog! 

My name is Lianne DiPaolo and I am a recent Commerce graduate from McMaster University with a minor in Geography and Earth Sciences. However, I have decided to follow my passion of teaching youth and am now a student at Brock University in the Consecutive Education program. I am thrilled about starting this new journey as I know the next two years will be memorable and enjoyable leading up to a great career. I hope to share all my wonderful experiences as well as share some insightful and creative projects that may spark your interest. I am excited to see what I will learn in tech class and how I can translate my tech knowledge into the classroom. I am already using Twitter where you can follow me and stay up to date on my thoughts and progress throughout the course. I have already started brainstorming what I want to do for genius hour as it needs to be something that grabs your personal interest and utilize your creativity. For inspiration, we were shown this video, Caine's Arcade, as he lets his creativity shine in creating a cardboard arcade.
